ESA letters and air travel

What changed in 2021
Since a Department of Transportation rule change, US airlines are no longer required to accommodate emotional support animals the way service animals are accommodated. Airlines can now treat an ESA as an ordinary pet, subject to pet fees, carrier-size limits, and each airline's own policy.
What still might help
Some airlines still consider ESA documentation at their discretion for things like waived pet fees or seating flexibility, but it varies airline to airline and isn't guaranteed. Check your specific airline's current pet policy directly before you fly; don't assume a letter alone secures anything.
